Absolutely. I actually saw the films much later in my life despite they'd been out for quite a while. But as we discussed previously, films you see when you're a teenager influence you a bunch. And I guess at the time I wanted everything to fit in nice and tight. I just wanted Frodo and Sam to succeed so it could all be over. But as you said, it takes just a little while to notice that things are never this simple. Frodo carrying the ring took a toll so big on him he basically had to leave his home and move on completely. Now it all makes perfect sense to me.
Your experience with Vertigo I've only had once. With Blade Runner. Another film which I hated the first time I saw it. But after multiple viewings I realized it was one of the best ones I've ever seen. Perhaps I need to try watching Vertigo again. Since I'm not much of a Hitchcock fan, I tend to watch his films once and be done with it. My favorite of his must be Rope, actually.
