Event Horizon: the fear is in not knowing
This film from 1997 has become a true cult classic. And with good reason.
Liberate tuteme ex inferis.
“Save yourself from hell”.
This is probably the final phrase Johnny Depp heard from Amber Heard’s previous partner before he handed her into his arms. But it also happens to be the most iconic line from Event Horizon.
To be honest, I’d say this phrase describes the movie perfectly.
While it is undoubtedly borderline impossible to come up with entirely new ways to think of a particular genre within filmmaking; sometimes it seems that the best we can do as artists is to offer a fresh angle from what has been done before. Event Horizon does exactly that.
Yes, I also find it shocking that a film by Paul W.S. Anderson managed to be one of the underrated gems in the true horror sphere. I did not expect to realize that the man known for his quirky video game adaptations could be quite adept at telling a horror story. Just like with Luc Besson, we should’ve listened to Milla Jovovich’s taste.
But what exactly about Event Horizon has transformed it from a box-office flop into a cult classic? What makes this film not another example of an excessively gory but ultimately pointless “scary” movie?
