Why feeling angry while playing a game actually makes us feel good.

Wrath seems to be the perpetual state of mind in people nowadays. The immediacy of social media combined with the fact that you can witness first hand a 14 year old’s opinion about anything are the perfect recipe for chaos.

Whether we like it or not, anger is one of the dominant emotions out there in the world. It is what makes Twitter so addictive despite making us incredibly miserable. There is just something unexplainable behind anger which “works” for us.

Video games are no exception. Taking advantage of this rather unfortunate tragedy in human psyche, games engage the player through emotion. Most of the times, that emotion happens to be anger.

Take for instance a game like Cuphead. This independent platformer developed by Studio MDHR back in 2017 acquired such a massive success that it went from being a timed-exclusive for Microsoft’s consoles to eventually showing up the Nintendo Switch and as a “guest” in Super Smash Bros.
