I wished I had played Final Fantasy IX earlier
Now I understand the civil war between VII and IX fans
My first Final Fantasy experience came to me more than a decade ago when I sat down with a friend to play FFVII when I was sixteen years old. I loved it. The fact I played the game almost 10 years after its original release changed nothing. I was still amazed by the detailed atmospheres, the mind-blowing music and the wonderful characters you actually gave a shit about. For someone who sees turn-based JRPG’s as exciting as gouging your eyes out with a toothpick, I would say that wasn’t bad at all. The remake was just as incredible (if not more) than the original just because of the nostalgia factor.
But then, I picked this game up for peanuts at the Nintendo Switch virtual store. Deeply dissatisfied with modern shitty culture, I was desperate to engage with a brand new story coming from a time where humor was still a thing.
Oh boy… How I regret not playing it when I was a dumb impressionable teenager.
Now, I’m not going to review the entire story. Chase Kip has done a far better job of it already and would suggest you check it out to freshen your mind, but mostly I just couldn’t bother.
Instead, I’ve decided to point out what made this game so goddamn special and beloved by many.
