I've only read the first novel and really liked it. However, I always try to separate the novel from the film as they're completely different things. As for the Mikael we see in the film, I really like Daniel's approach. Instead of being a bit of a ladies man like Bond, he went for the more "clumsy" and reserved kind of guy. And that goes along well with Lisbeth's more intense personality.
