A great director is a commander in arms in every sense of the word.

They don’t have to be a writer but undoubtedly must have the capacity to distinguish a promising screenplay from a mediocre one.

They have to know the basic elements of cinematography and blocking to perfectly execute the choreography between the camera and the actors.

They have to communicate their vision to the production, makeup and costume departments to make sure nothing feels off.

They have to be aware of editing techniques before they start filming to make sure everything ties up neatly in the final cut.

They have to manage egos in every single department while making sure their own doesn’t bite them in the ass further down the line.

But more importantly, they have to be incredibly versatile storytellers. Unafraid to challenge themselves but smart enough to compromise when there is no choice left.

British director, screenwriter and fellow offender of frail egos; Martin McDonagh, is all of those things. His capability to command superb performances on screen is followed by a superlative understanding of how cinema works…
