This is the question I've been trying to answer for literally a decade. I still don't have a clear answer on it. But I do believe rom-coms can inspire to be incredible movies. But they have to find a way to tackle the unconventional. I also believe that you have to believe what's happening. And love is a very hard emotion to fake. So when the lead actors do not sell it or the plot feels contrived and rushed, it ultimately doesn't work.
