Underrated Movie Villains I: Lord Cutler Beckett
One of the best things about Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy turns out to be one of the smallest. SPOILERS INCOMING.
Hell yeah! I’ve been wanting to cover this nasty little bastard for ages.
But first, let’s talk about a single character which can render an entire movie obsolete if he/she manages to be shit: the villain.
Villains are an ESSENTIAL part of stories. A film with a bad antagonist is like trying to walk smoothly down the stairs with crutches stuck to your eyes. It will probably suck.
Now, some of them manage to be so iconic and brilliant that people actually end up rooting for them. It is truly remarkable to see film audiences cheer on the likes of Tony Montana, the Joker or the senseless killer of “younglings” Darth Vader. You know, folks with the ethical integrity of a Goldman Sachs employee.
Now, despite the innate “cool factor” associated with villains, some of them do get more… love than others.
Physical presence, a sexy body, a deep voice and a believable performance of a ruthless psychotic will undoubtedly help to make a villain…
