Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Woody Allen’s Gem Regarding Love
Could the question “what do I want in a partner” be ultimately impossible to answer? Spoilers incoming!
Woody Allen is a tough nut to crack as a filmmaker. My experience is akin to that of a toxic love-hate relationship; one which either bores me to death and leaves a sour taste in my mouth (Annie Hall), or a mind-bending insight on the contradictions of human nature and the surprisingly destructive of sex (Match Point) which I end up adoring.
I’m glad to say the 2008 “romantic comedy” Vicky Cristina Barcelona belongs to the latter, fighting toe-to-toe to become my all-time favorite from Woody Allen’s filmography. My fascination towards this movie comes with the fact it dares to think about a rather uncomfortable statement regarding human relationships. It all has to with the million-dollar question: what the hell do I want from a partner?
Some people struggle with this question for years. Decades even. So Woody Allen has decided to hint at a possible “solution”. And his answer is not only a bit terrifying, it’s downright depressing.
