Should Star Fox go back to its roots?
Is there any hope for this beloved and yet ever morphing franchise?
For any person stuck on perpetual nostalgia, the Star Fox series is undoubtedly a subject that will incite a little pain. After all, the franchise has fallen to complete obscurity, where the last few titles of the series have been disappointing (to put it lightly) for the veteran enthusiasts of the Star Fox team.
Like most fans of these furry little devils, I was introduced properly to the Star Fox saga through its revolutionary take on what an arcade game should be like. Of course, I’m talking about Star Fox 64. This is a game that had surprisingly good narrative, well defined characters and a gallery-shooter style gameplay that was both challenging and engaging without being repetitive.
The additional gimmicks such as missions on the central star of the Lylat System which damaged your Arwing constantly, enemies that could only be defeated with limited-stock bombs and the disadvantages you entered when you lost a wing for your ship; all of them created a surprisingly fresh take towards a typical shooter. After earning a spot in the Super Smash Bros roster, Star Fox seemed to be headed to a good place after all. However, what came next, some people argued, was the beginning of the end for Fox McCloud and his team of furry mercenaries.
